PRESIDENTIAL NOTES - January 2003
by Russ Scherer

The newly elected officers of OSJI took office on January 1st.  The group got busy right away when we held a planning meeting on January 5th which was open to all people interested in Judo in the state of Ohio.   The purpose of the meeting was to capture all available input in the form of "Blue Sky Topics" which would be considered when formulating plans and programs for OSJI during the next few years.  The snow kept some people away, but a lot of ideas were discussed and later in the day prioritized by the Executive Committee and finally the budget committee developed a proposed budget to address the prioritized list of programs to be undertaken during 2003.  I thank those who made the time to take part in this process and added their insight to make our programs focused.

My goals for the next 4 years are varied and cover a wide spectrum of activities.  We will, however, have to maintain vigilence to assure we do not dilute our efforts to the point that our programs become ineffective.  A strong effort will be made in the "grass roots" area of judo development, including interclub workouts, dual meets, developmental tournaments, and clinics on a variety of topics which will be designed for various levels of knowledge and ability.   Activities such as our travelling team and Super Saturday will be bolstered.   Funds will also be designated to support the activities of some of our "elite players".  If you have a special interest in any of these areas, please contact me and we'll get you involved.

Our approach will be to utilize people interested in a project, develop a timeline for that program and hold those in charge accountable for meeting the milestones in a timely manner.  It will be a more stringent mode of operation, but we should accomplish more of our goals.

It is my sincere desire to tear down the barriers that have arisen between individuals, clubs and organizations which continue to haunt us and keep us from reaching our potential.  Let's try to determine our participation in an activity based on the merits of the activity and not on who is running the event.   Open the doors of communication - let me know what you like and what you don't like about our OSJI programs.  How can we help you get more out of Judo?

Many programs have been discussed and soon will be initiated.  Much hard work is ahead of us, but with your participation we, as a judo community, should have a successful and prosperous 2003.

Thanks,

Russ Scherer
OSJI President
